When you join a breakout room during a Microsoft Teams meeting, you’ll be able to participate in activities and discussions with a smaller group of participants.

Join a breakout room

Join a breakout room as soon as your meeting organizer opens them.

Depending on your meeting role and the meeting settings, you’ll either choose your own breakout room or be assigned to one.

  • If your room was assigned, you’ll join it automatically when the room opens.

  • If you can self-select a room, you’ll be able to view the list of open rooms and join from there. You’ll also be able to switch between open rooms while breakout rooms are in session.

  • If you’re a meeting organizer or breakout room manager, you can join and switch between open breakout rooms.

To choose and join a breakout room:

  1. Select Rooms Breakout rooms icon in your meeting controls.

  2. Find the room you want to join.

    • Select the arrow next to a room name to see who’s in that room.

  3. Select Join to join the room.

When you join the breakout room, your camera and mic will be turned off until you turn them on. Switch to a different open room by returning to Rooms Breakout rooms icon in your meeting controls and selecting Join next to the room you want to switch to.

Note: If you switch to a different breakout room, you can still view your previous room’s chat history if the room settings allow it, but you won’t be able to send or receive new messages in it.

Chat in a breakout room

Each breakout room has its own chat. After you join a breakout room, select Chat Teams Chat Tab icon in your meeting controls to view and send messages in that room. Meeting organizers can view and participate in any breakout room chat from their main Teams chat list.

Note: When a breakout room closes or the session ends, the room chat will end and can’t be continued. You’ll still be able to view the chat history and shared files if the room settings allow it.

Return to the main meeting

If your breakout room session expires or your meeting organizer closes your room, you’ll automatically return to the main meeting. If the room settings allow it, you can also return to the main meeting anytime by selecting Leave room in your meeting controls.
