Note: Project Manager (preview) is currently rolling out to customers. Learn more about it in Frequently asked questions about Project Manager.

Microsoft Planner offers a set of ready-made Project Manager templates to provide you with a head start for creating a new plan and interacting with the project manager. The templates support a range of possible plan types and have a set of tasks that the project manager can help complete.

Why use a pre-made template?

If you're brand new to Project Manager (preview), starting with a template is a great way to get familiar with the features of the project manager and understand the best ways to interact with it. Additionally, if your intended plan falls into one of the categories of our pre-made templates, using the template gives you a head start and reduces the struggles that can come with starting from a blank page.

Create a new Project Manager plan from a template

  1. Open Planner in Teams.

  2. Select + New plan in the bottom left of the page.

  3. Select See all templates in the bottom right of the New plan screen.

  4. Scroll down to Project Manager templates.

  5. Select any Project Manager template that meets your needs. For example, select Research Report under the Project Manager Templates header for a plan to write a research report on any topic.

  6. Review the template to ensure it meets your needs

  7. Select Use template

  8. Give your plan a name and select the relevant group to add to the plan

  9. Select Create

Edit the template to meet your needs

After creating a templated Project Manager plan, you can edit the plan goal and add files to help the project manager properly execute tasks. Let’s look at an example:

Oscar is a product manager at an EV company. He is conducting market research on the EV market. He is using the Project Manager Research template, and to edit the template to meet his need, Oscar completes the follow steps:

  1. On the Project Manager view, under Share your goal and relevant content, edit the template goal “Complete a research report on the life cycle of a great white shark” by replacing “life cycle of a great white shark” with “EV market”

  2. Click out of the Share your goal and relevant content box to save your changes.

Tip: Do not select Regenerate tasks unless you change the entire template goal (e.g. change from “Complete a research report on the life cycle of a great white shark” to “Generate a cover image for a research report on sharks”)

With these personalizations made, Oscar can now assign tasks to the project manager to start execution on the plan. Learn more about executing tasks with the project manager.
