Cleaning your Microsoft device is important to prevent dirt accumulation from affecting its functions. Clean monthly or whenever needed.

  • Don't apply liquids directly to your mouse or keyboard.

  • Always disconnect the device (or remove the batteries if you have a wireless device) before you clean it.

Using disinfecting products on your mouse or keyboard

You can use an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to safely clean Microsoft mice and keyboards. Apply an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution that's 70% or less to a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the device.

Microsoft cannot make a determination of the effectiveness of a given disinfectant product in fighting pathogens, such as COVID-19. Please refer to your local public health authority's guidance on how to stay safe from potential infection.

Clean your mouse

  • Dampen a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with mild soap and water and gently wipe the outer surface of the mouse, the wheel, and the optical sensor. For light-colored mice, we recommend cleaning with the isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution as needed.

Clean your keyboard

  1. Hold the keyboard upside down and tap it gently to remove loose dirt and other debris.

  2. Use a can of compressed air (available from photo and computer stores) to blow dust and debris from the surface and from between the keys. As an alternative, gently vacuum the top of your keyboard using a dusting brush.

  3. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with mild soap and water and gently wipe the surface of the keyboard and keys, being careful not to drip any water into the keyboard.
