Having trouble with your Surface Pro Flex Keyboard? You may see that the Keyboard:

  • Doesn't appear to connect and doesn't respond at all

  • Keyboard does not work wirelessly

  • Appears to disconnect or stop responding randomly

There are some solutions you can try:

Using the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard connected directly to the Surface Pro.

  2. Inspect for any debris, damage, or obstructions that could prevent a proper connection.

  3. Navigate to Start > Power > Shut down to turn off your Surface completely.

  4. Hold down the power button for a full 20 seconds. You might see the Surface logo appear briefly—keep holding the button until the logo reappears.

  5. Reconnect the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard, ensuring all magnets are in contact with the bottom edge of your Surface.

Ensure the battery is adequately charged to work wirelessly. Reattach the keyboard to your Surface Pro and view the keyboard battery status within the Surface app.

Open the Surface app

Note: If you don't see the Surface app in the search results, you might need to download the Surface app from Microsoft Store.

In the Surface app, choose the Keyboard located at the bottom of the application.

  • If the keyboard is not "Surface Pro Flex Keyboard," the keyboard won't operate in detached mode. Wireless capabilities are exclusive to the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard.

  • Beneath the keyboard name, check to ensure the battery is adequately charged.

  • Click on "Firmware Update" to verify that the keyboard's firmware is the latest version.

If the battery is not charged or the keyboard is not up to date, allow time to perform those actions before detaching the keyboard.

Should the keyboard fail to work wirelessly even after a full or partial charge, please follow these steps:

  1. Detach the keyboard from your device.

  2. Hold down the Esc key for approximately 5 seconds until the LED light on the Fn key illuminates.

  3. Connect the keyboard to your Surface Pro device.

  4. Leave the keyboard connected for a minimum of 30 seconds before attempting to use it wirelessly again.
