Save a copy of your school notes to your OneNote notebook 

If you are a student using a Microsoft 365 account, your work in OneNote is stored in OneDrive. This enables you to save a personal copy of your notes and reference them in the future.

Get started

  1. Make sure that you have a personal Microsoft account. If you don’t have an account, create one here

    Important:  If your account ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com, you automatically have a personal Microsoft account.

  2. Sign into OneNote with both your school and personal accounts.

  3. Create a new notebook using your personal account. This new notebook is where you'll save a personal copy of the work from your school account.

Copy notes from your school account to your personal account 

  1. Open the OneNote app

  2. Navigate to the notebook with the notes you'd like to copy over.

  3. Right-click on the page that you want to copy, then select Move/Copy from the pop-up menu.

  4. Choose the section where you want to copy, then select Copy.

  5. Navigate to your personal account's notebook to view the copy of that page.

  6. Repeat the steps above for any pages you want to copy into your personal account.

Copy class materials from a OneNote Class Notebook

If the notes that you want to copy are part of a OneNote Class Notebook, in addition to your own notes, you can also choose to make a copy of the supporting class materials from the class Content Library and Collaboration Space.

Copy a Class Notebook from your school account to your personal account using OneNote for the web.

  1. Sign into your school’s Microsoft 365 portal using your student credentials (your_name@yourschool.edu).

  2. Select OneNote > Class notebooks.

  3. Right-click on the notebook you want to copy to your personal Microsoft account and select Save a Copy.

  4. A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to choose where you want to save a copy of this notebook. Choose Save to a Microsoft Account.

    Note: If you weren't already signed into your personal Microsoft account, you'll be prompted to sign into it now.

  5. After signing into your personal Microsoft account, you'll be presented with a screen requesting permission for the OneNote.com service to access your personal account. Choose Yes to save a copy to your personal Microsoft account.

  6. Select Copy notebook to confirm that you wish to make a copy of the notebook.

Download a copy of your OneDrive files 

If you are graduating or transferring schools, you may want to save a personal copy of documents to reference later

Important: The Notebooks folder in your OneDrive is view-only. In order to save the contents of your OneNote notebooks elsewhere, see above. 

Download a copy of your assignments in Teams

Assignments in Teams allows students and educators to access and organize class assignments. When you submit an assignment for a class, it's stored in the Assignments tab within that class. 

You can view all class assignments by selecting Assignments within Teams. Follow the instructions below to download a copy of an assignment.

  1. Sign into your school’s Microsoft 365 portal using your student credentials (your_name@yourschool.edu).

  2. Open Teams.

  3. Select Assignments.

  4. Select the assignment you want to save.

  5. Select More attachments options  The button with three horizontal dots is an ellipsis that opens a menu of commands.  on any item listed in the My Work section, select Download  Download to download a copy of your work to your personal device.

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each assignment you want to download.
