This topic covers the fields with the title of “Project.” For a list of all fields in Microsoft Project, see the Available fields reference .

Description    The Project fields show the name of the subprojects where tasks, resources, or assignments originate. If the task, resource, or assignment originated in the current project file, its name appears in this field.

There are several categories of Project fields.

Data Type    Text

Project (task field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    Project inserts the name of the project file where the task originates, whether it's the name of a subproject or the currently active project file.

Best Uses    Add the Project field to a task view when you're working in a master project and you want to display the names of the subprojects that are the source of the task. This is particularly helpful when working with multiple projects in one window. This is also helpful when you need to distinguish which project a task is associated with.

Example    Your project is a master project that contains three subprojects. As you work with tasks and adjust the schedule, you want to see the names of the projects where the tasks originate. You add the Project field to the Task Sheet view.

Project (resource field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    Project inserts the name of the project file where the resource originates, whether it's the name of a subproject or the currently active project file.

Best Uses    Add the Project field to a resource view when you're working in a master project and you want to display the names of the subprojects from which the resource originates. This is particularly helpful when working with multiple projects in one window. This is also helpful when you need to distinguish which project a resource is associated with.

Example    Your project is a master project that contains three subprojects. As you work with resources, you want to see the names of the projects from which the resources originate. You add the Project field to the Resource Sheet view.

Project (assignment field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    Project inserts the name of the project file from which the assignment originates, whether it is the name of a subproject or the active project file. If the inserted project is a resource pool file, the name of the original sharer project appears in this field for the assignment.

Best Uses    Add the Project field to the timephased portion of the Task Usage or Resource Usage view when you're working in a master project and you want to display the names of the subprojects where an assignment originates. This is particularly helpful when you are working with shared resource pools. This is also helpful when you need to distinguish which project an assignment is associated with.

Example    Your project is a master project that contains three subprojects. You want to see the names of the project files from which the resources' various assignments originate. You add the Project field to the Task Usage view.
