If you have an HP 4500 or HP 8500 Officejet printer, problems with the print spooler service might prevent Office from installing. To fix this, temporarily stop the print spooler.

  1. Cancel the installation by closing the setup window (click the X in the corner). If the window doesn't close, use Task Manager to stop the installation:

    • Windows 8: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Task Manager. If necessary, click More details to expand the list on the Processes tab. Then click Microsoft Office Click-to-Run > End Task.

    • Windows 7: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, click officeclicktorun.exe > End Process.

  2. Go to the list of services:

    • Windows 8: On the Start screen, type services.msc and then click services in the list of results.

    • Windows 7: Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

  3. Double-click Print Spooler, and then click Stop > OK.

  4. Try installing Office again.

  5. After Office is installed, go back to the list of services and open Print Spooler.

    • Windows 8: On the Start screen, type services.msc and then click services in the list of results. Double-click Print Spooler, and then click Start > OK.

    • Windows 7: Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. Double-click Print Spooler, and then click Start > OK.
