Can't sign in to Hotmail or Outlook.com?

Microsoft always keeps an eye out for unusual sign-in activity, just in case someone else is trying to get into your account. If you're travelling to a new place or using a new device, we might ask you to confirm that it really is you.

Sign out of Hotmail or Outlook.com

  1. To sign out, go to Outlook.com.

  2. Select your account initials or account picture at the top corner of your Inbox.

  3. Select Sign out.

    Tips:

    • If you don't see your picture at the top of screen, check to see if ad blocking is turned on. Sometimes this prevents the picture from showing.

    • If you don't see Profile or Account options, you can access them at https://account.microsoft.com/

    • If you don't see Sign Out, you can also Sign out manually. Don't forget to close all browser windows.

    • If you no longer have access to a device where you were signed in, read How to sign out everywhere.

Staying signed in with Outlook

The sign-in experience is changing when you sign in to Outlook in a web browser, and starting from February 2025, you will automatically stay signed in unless you sign out, or unless you use private browsing.

If you use Outlook on your own computer, your browser will remember your sign in information, but if you sign in on a computer, phone or tablet that doesn't belong to you, or is accessed by other people, you should use a private browsing window instead. Learn more.

How to sign out of Outlook apps

It's no longer possible to sign out of your Outlook app or be prompted for a password to sign in.

Tip: If you share your computer with others, you might want to prevent them from accessing your email account while they use your computer by asking other users to sign in to your computer with their own account. Learn how.
